Terminology of the Ronin Dragon Karate System

  • Dojo (道場) - A Place of study or learning (school)
  • Karate do (空手道) - The way of empty hand
  • Bow/Rei (礼) - A respectful motion to show humility and loyalty
  • Creed - A formal statement of shared beliefs
  • Dento (伝統) - Tradition
  • Meiyo (名誉) - Honor
  • Sonkei (尊敬) - Respect
  • Kiritsu (規律) - Discipline
  • Yuki (勇気) - Courage
  • Seigo-Se (整合性) - Integrity
  • Gi (着) - Student uniform
  • Obi (帯) - Karate Belt
  • Kata (型) - A specific set of movements formed into a routine
  • Techniques - Traditional self defense movements with grab arts, locks, traps, throws, or even strikes
  • Sparring (組手) - Sparring is a controlled fight with safety gear
  • Weapons - Weapons will be performed as katas. Students learn how to maneuver the weapon and know how to use it in combat.
  • Bunkai (分解) - application of kata techniques
  • Mawatte (回って) - Turn around
  • Shuto- Uke (手刀受) - knife- hand block
  • Kiay/Kiai (気合) - Yelling expression with strength
  • Shugo (集合) - Line Up
  • Yosh/Yoi (用意) - Ready Position/Attention
  • Hajime (始め) - Begin
  • Ichi (一) - One
  • Ni (二) - Two
  • San (三) - Three
  • Shi (四) - Four
  • Go (五) - Five
  • Roku (六) - Six
  • Shichi (六) - Seven

  • Renshi (錬士) - Polished Instructor and a Teacher of Teachers
  • Shihan (師範) - Head instructor of the Dojo (Highest Rank in Ronin Dragon System)
